Glossy leaf with wet-on-wet watercolour – Painting a Camellia leaf

Hello,

It is the start of Camellia season here in the UK, so I thought it would be a good time to post a tutorial of these slightly tricky glossy leaves.
I always paint my leaves wet-on-wet but it is even more important for the shiny ones. Painting wet-on-wet avoids all hard lines within the shape and the strong highlights look soft and natural. A hard edge around a highlight would make it look like a hole in the leaf rather than a patch of light.
Here is the palette I used for the Camellia (all Daniel Smith paints).

The shadows are painted first with the Harmonic Shadows mix: Phthalo Blue Red Shade + Nickel Azo Yellow + Quinacridone Coral.

The mid-green is Phthalo Green Yellow Shade + Nickel Azo Yellow + Quinacridone Coral. For the darker green, add a touch of Phthalo Blue Red Shade.

A bit of dry brush work is done right at the end to add details.

The Camellia was a Patreon project three year ago. It was a big project with several hours of video tutorials. I extracted footage from 3 of these videos to concentrate on the leaf.

Happy Painting!
